Leah came to her feet and looked around, wondering how the man had disappeared so quickly. The lightning and thunder seemed muted in her mind as she searched the undergrowth and found nothing. The encounter had been strange. Unnerving. As much as she wanted to be on her way after Kaor, she had difficulty believing her eyes. A gust of snow swirled around her, bringing the frozen moisture up onto her neck
She shivered but thought it had less to do with the snow and more to do with the stranger. The sense of evil she had felt in his presence was gone as well.
Now that was something, wasnât it? Perhaps he really had disappeared, though Leah hadnât seen him go.
Was he a ghost? An apparition? She swallowed. He was too real to be a crazed vision, wasnât he?
She shook her head and examined the trees, wondering if he had somehow flown away. Some of the Emperorâs mages were said to do that sort of thing, though sheâd never seen it firsthand. Kaor had confessed to trying but hadnât figured out how.
The blade had seemed real enough, but it was difficult to say for sure as she hadnât touched it. The glimpses sheâd caught of his face had been vivid.
She got to her feet, afraid the apparition would reappear, but she remained alone. She shivered as the wind blew more snow into her face and around the sides of her neck. For a fitful moment, she was seized with the desire to run home, beg her mother for forgiveness, and forget sheâd ever known a boy named Kaor.
Forget him.
That was what all the others were going to do, except for any who managed to claim the Emperorâs Gift.
She wanted to move faster, but she forced herself to move at a slow enough pace she could avoid any more surprises along the way. The way ahead was covered in shadow, the constant lightning making the way seem as though the shadows moved. And maybe they were. The stranger left her with more fear than sheâd felt all night. More than when Jules had attacked her. More than when the lightning and thunder had started. More than when her mother had threatened to disown her. More than when the gong had first rung out.
Sheâd known in her heart the moment sheâd heard it that it had been rung for Kaor. It was for Kaor that she pushed forward.
Kaor was a fool to wait so long, but at the same time, could she live with herself if she didnât chase after him? What if she returned, apologized to her mother, and went to bed, hoping that Jules would keep her mouth shut?
She couldnât stomach the idea, so one foot followed another.
Perhaps her determination stemmed from the fact she had planned out her response to this eventuality well in advance of it happening, knowing of Kaorâs inability to see the precariousness of his own situation.
The cursed fool had waited long enough to run after the
