Leah came to her feet and looked around, wondering how the man had disappeared so quickly. The lightning and thunder seemed muted in her mind as she searched the undergrowth and found nothing. The encounter had been strange. Unnerving. As much as she wanted to be on her way after Kaor, she had difficulty believing her eyes. A gust of snow swirled around her, bringing the frozen moisture up onto her neck

She shivered but thought it had less to do with the snow and more to do with the stranger. The sense of evil she had felt in his presence was gone as well.

Now that was something, wasn’t it? Perhaps he really had disappeared, though Leah hadn’t seen him go.

Was he a ghost? An apparition? She swallowed. He was too real to be a crazed vision, wasn’t he?

She shook her head and examined the trees, wondering if he had somehow flown away. Some of the Emperor’s mages were said to do that sort of thing, though she’d never seen it firsthand. Kaor had confessed to trying but hadn’t figured out how.

She wanted to move faster, but she forced herself to move at a slow enough pace she could avoid any more surprises along the way. The way ahead was covered in shadow, the constant lightning making the way seem as though the shadows moved. And maybe they were. The stranger left her with more fear than she’d felt all night. More than when Jules had attacked her. More than when the lightning and thunder had started. More than when her mother had threatened to disown her. More than when the gong had first rung out.

She’d known in her heart the moment she’d heard it that it had been rung for Kaor. It was for Kaor that she pushed forward.

Kaor was a fool to wait so long, but at the same time, could she live with herself if she didn’t chase after him? What if she returned, apologized to her mother, and went to bed, hoping that Jules would keep her mouth shut?

She couldn’t stomach the idea, so one foot followed another.

Perhaps her determination stemmed from the fact she had planned out her response to this eventuality well in advance of it happening, knowing of Kaor’s inability to see the precariousness of his own situation.

The cursed fool had waited long enough to run after the
